THE GEOLOGICAL PROCESS

The Budher Caves were carved out of limestone rock formations. One can find formations of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and columns which were formed millions of years ago through the deposit of minerals carried by water. You will also find intricate patterns textures covering the cave walls.

An amazing feature of these caves is the presence of underground streams and waterfalls. These add a mystique and allure to these caves.

The Budher Caves were also seen as spiritual havens, serving as a retreat for the seekers of truth and enlightenment. The natural surroundings seemed ideal for meditation, introspection and spiritual renewal.
Overview
The Budher Caves are located 30 kms from Chakrata and a 3 km trek from the Budher Forest Rest House. This Rest House was constructed in 1868 and is run by the Uttarakhand Forest Department. The trek to the cave is very scenic and offers a beautiful view of the surroundings.
The Budher Caves are also known as Miola Caves, named after the German national, Miola, who discovered the caves. Near the Budher Caves, one can find the Miola Top or Tibba which is a meadow encircling an old Shiva Temple also known as the "Temple of Fairies". Located at a height of 2590 mtrs, this meadow provides a panoramic view of the Himalayan ranges. The cave is very dark and you will need a torch to move around inside the cave! These caves stretch across a large expanse and have intrigued explorers, adventurers and spiritual seekers!​

THE HISTORY

The Budher Caves are believed to have been formed millions of years ago through geological processes like weathering and erosion. According to folklore, sages and ascetics took refuge in these caves because of its serene ambience and spiritual vibrations. There is archaeological evidence to suggest that these caves were inhabited from prehistoric days. Some of the items that were discovered here include stone tools, pottery shards and other artifacts dating back thousands of years. It is clear that there was a rich cultural heritage that existed.

Explore the caves like an adventure. The cave offers chambers, tunnels and alcoves which can be discovered. Some of the natural formations resemble animals and mythical creatures. You are sure to find some mysteries hidden beneath the ground!

HOW TO REACH: The nearest airport and railway stations are in Dehradun. Take a taxi or bus from Dehradun to Chakrata. Limited accommodation is available near Budher Caves. It is better to stay in Chakrata where you will find hotels, homestays and guesthouses.
