CHAKRATA
Chakrata is one of Uttarakhand's hidden gems. Located just 88 kms from Uttarakhand's capital, Dehradun, Chakrata was the summer retreat for the East India Company officials during the British era. Situated at a height of 7,000 ft above sea level, Chakrata is considered a mini hill station and it has an army cantonment area which was set up in 1886.
Chakrata is located in a high security location which makes it out of bounds for foreign tourists without a permit. This hill station is popular for nature lovers and wildlife photographers. The forests are populated with wild fowls, spotted deer and panthers. Tiger Falls is another tourist attraction located just 20 kms from Chakrata town. This waterfall drops from a height of 300 mtrs into a rocky pond.
Chakrata offers a sweeping view of the Yamuna Valley. The Kharamba Peak at 10,000 mtrs above sea level is one of the highest peaks in the area. Ski enthusiasts can ski on the northern slopes. There are a number of trekking trails around Chakrata. Rock climbing and rappelling are other activities that can be carried out.
As compared to Mussoorie, Chakrata is less commercialized. It is perfect for those seeking a serene and pollution-free environment.
